The Basics

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America views Lutherans as a diverse group of people, trusting that the Holy Spirit is leading us to service in the World.

Members of St. Peter's  Evangelical Lutheran Church are connected to the faith of the church through the ages and around the world.  We believe in the Triune God. We are part of God'’s unfolding plan.  When we gather for worship, we connect with believers everywhere, past, present and future.  When we study the Bible and pray, we are drawn more deeply into God'’s own saving journey. When we serve others and address social issues that affect the common good, we live out our Christian faith.

There is a basic pattern for worship among Lutherans. At St.Peter's Evangelical Lutheran we gather to encounter God'’s Word, we share a meal at the Lord’'s table and we are sent into the world.

Worship is fundamentally about what God is doing and our response to God'’s action.

Worship is an encounter with God, who saves us through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Taken together, the Word of God and the sacraments, Holy Baptism and Holy Communion, are refered to the means of grace. We believe that Jesus Christ is present in these means through the power of the Holy Spirit.  Worship can be described as a “gathering around the means of grace.” For Lutherans, it's our way of saying that we trust that God is genuinely present with us in baptism, in learning, and in sharing the bread and wine of Holy Communion.

The cross is the central symbol that marks the Lutheran worship space and when we worship, music and song fills the air. The voices of all the people joined in song and the participation of all in the worship is a witness to our conviction that in worship we are being drawn in to God'’s power and spirit.
